TWENTY-ONE DAYS OF
PRAYER AND FASTING

Throughout Scripture, prayer and fasting are designed to work together. In today’s culture, fasting is often viewed as a standalone health trend or a wellness habit. While it can benefit the body, for Christians, fasting deepens the power of prayer and aligns the heart with God. By intentionally spending time in prayer while giving up food for a set period, we hit the reset button of our souls and are renewed from the inside out.
The goal of prayer and fasting is to draw near to God.
For the next 21 days, we will engage the disciplines of prayer and fasting together to reorient our attention and affections toward God. Use the Scripture and prompts in this guide to direct your daily time and conversation with God—a starting point to restore your soul, renew your mind, and prepare your heart for what He wants to do in your life and the community around you.
TYPES OF FASTS
ELIMINATION FAST
This type of fast involves removing certain elements from your diet. One example of an elimination fast is the Daniel Fast, during which you remove meat, sweeteners, and bread from your diet and consume water and juice for fluids and fruits and vegetables for food.
INTERMITTENT FAST
This fast, sometimes called the “Jewish Fast,” involves abstaining from eating any food in the morning and afternoon. This can correspond with specific times of the day, such as 6:00 AM to 3:00 PM, or from sunup to sundown.
COMPLETE FAST
In this type of fast, you drink only liquids, typically water with light juices as an option. And you don't consume any food.
FASTING
LENGTH
While we are focusing on prayer and fasting for 21-days, you can choose the number of days and the dates for any of the fasting types listed above. When deciding how long to fast, consider your prior fasting experience, medical conditions, and events happening in your life. Common lengths for a fast are 3, 7, 14, or 21 days. If you're new to fasting, it may be wise to choose a shorter partial or selective fast.
PRAYER GUIDES
Printed guides will be available during the fast.
