Victory Through Worship
by Nicole Elliott
"Believe His prophets, and so you shall be blessed. And he consulted with the people, and he appointed singers to Jehovah and praisers to praise the beauty of holiness as they went out before the army, and to say, Praise Jehovah, for His mercy endures forever. And when they began to sing and to praise, Jehovah set ambushes against the sons of Ammon, Moab, and mount Seir, who had come against Judah. And they were beaten." 2 Chronicles 20 (NLT)
Jehoshaphat and his people were under attack. It was a big deal - there was no way they could win this battle. He called his people to pray and fast. He sent worshipers out before the battle to sing and praise the Lord. It was through that worship that God defeated the army and the battle was won. God tells us that it's not by might nor by power but by the Spirit of God that we are able to accomplish the things in our life that seem so impossible (Zechariah 4:6).
I remember when I was younger, our family had just gotten some very bad news.... news that would devastate my father. We called family and friends to come over and pray with us. All of a sudden, very organically, we started singing, we started worshiping, praising and thanking the Lord. When it was time to tell my dad the news, that we were all certain would be the worst news of his life... he so surprisingly was able to take it with grace and a certain, calm surrender that we know could have only come from the Lord. I know that on that day, the battle was won in worship.
Of the things in my life that I have been the most passionate about, singing is definitely one of them. Not just singing but worshiping. Worshiping is such a powerful act. Not because it's what we do when we go to church but because God has called us to praise Him from the deepest part of us. It's out of that place of worship that chains are broken and freedom begins to reign. Like Jehoshaphat and his people, I believe that God has called us to worship before the battle. To see the goodness of God through our circumstances and praise Him for it--it will transform our hearts and create a new trajectory for our life.
I challenge you, next time you feel defeated, you feel overwhelmed, overcome by your circumstances, sing a song of praise to God. Think of the good things He has done for you, praise Him for it, praise Him for His sacrifice to us, for His mercy. Just see what He does in your life. Never hold back a song of praise from your lips--you never know what battle, small or large, could be won through it!
