Jesus - Hope for the Broken
17 The LORD hears his people when they call to him for help. He rescues them from all their troubles. 18 The LORD is close to the brokenhearted; he rescues those whose spirits are crushed. 19 The righteous person faces many troubles, but the LORD comes to the rescue each time. 20For the LORD protects the bones of the righteous; not one of them is broken! 21Calamity will surely destroy the wicked, and those who hate the righteous will be punished. 22 But the LORD will redeem those who serve him. No one who takes refuge in him will be condemned.
1 Praise the LORD ! How good to sing praises to our God! How delightful and how fitting! 2 The LORD is rebuilding Jerusalem and bringing the exiles back to Israel. 3 He heals the brokenhearted and bandages their wounds. 4 He counts the stars and calls them all by name. 5 How great is our Lord! His power is absolute! His understanding is beyond comprehension! 6 The LORD supports the humble, but he brings the wicked down into the dust. 7 Sing out your thanks to the LORD ; sing praises to our God with a harp.
The book of Psalms is one of my very favorite books in the bible because of the way in which it teaches me how to pray. The two Psalms that we’re looking at today teach us how to respond to the sense of brokenness, which is something we can all relate to. Psalm 34 beautifully depicts God’s response to those who experience brokenness. I love that His first response is to draw close to us! One of the major side-effects to feeling broken is a feeling of isolation and God reminds us through scripture that no matter how isolated we feel in life, He is always near to the broken hearted!
Psalm 147 re-emphasizes the power that is displayed when the all creating, all powerful, God of the universe responds to the brokenness of humanity. Verses four and five really stick out to me - “He counts the stars and calls them all by name. How great is our Lord! His power is absolute! His understanding is beyond comprehension!” I am astounded by the fact that the God who has the starts numbered and named would choose to draw near to me! Additionally, His power to draw near is absolute, which means there is nothing or no one that could ever change His desire to be near me or you. This is the sort of reminder that we all could use from time to time! This is the reason why Jesus is the hope for our brokenness!
