Jesus - Hope for the Anxious
Luke 12:22-31 (NIV)
22 Then Jesus said to his disciples: “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear. 23 For life is more than food, and the body more than clothes. 24 Consider the ravens: They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn; yet God feeds them. And how much more valuable you are than birds! 25 Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to your life? 26 Since you cannot do this very little thing, why do you worry about the rest?
27 “Consider how the wild flowers grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. 28 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today, and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, how much more will he clothe you—you of little faith! 29 And do not set your heart on what you will eat or drink; do not worry about it. 30 For the pagan world runs after all such things, and your Father knows that you need them. 31 But seek his kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well.
Anxiety. This is something I struggle with personally. It is something that tries to define who we are as people. Anxiety does not define us. Jesus defines us. We are complete in Jesus, so why should we be under anxiety’s power when we have the greatest power of all; The Holy Spirit living inside of us! Let me tell you a little secret, anxiety and stress are like best friends. They go everywhere with each other. Anxiety can pop up in many situations of life like friendships, school, family, and change. These are some of the areas where anxiety likes to thrive. Change is something that can cause major anxiety, but the only person that knows our perfect plan is Jesus. We cannot worry about the change that will come one day; we should be happy and ready for that.
I know it is easier said than done. I’ve been there. One time I was driving back home from Bismarck right after the UGo California mission trip and I knew everything was going to change. I knew it was going to be for the better, but that did not help the anxiety I was feeling. I was blinded by the change and I did not think I was ready. So I turned off the radio and started to talk to God out loud. After my prayer, I felt instant relief from the anxiety and all the “I’m not good enough” or “I’m not ready” thoughts in my head were gone. Prayer is our most powerful weapon against the enemy and anxiety. We should not worry what tomorrow holds because each day is a gift from God and He plans it out perfectly. Anxiety has no hold on you for YOU are a CHILD of GOD!!! You will do amazing things; all you have to do is trust in the plans He has for you!
